Outgoing Browns president Mike Holmgren paid a surprise visit to the media Monday afternoon. He expressed dismay at a report by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason LaCanfora that he is interested in coaching the Dallas Cowboys.
LaCanfora has since tweeted that he never reported Holmgren has spoken to Cowboys officials -- only that he would be interested if the job opened up. Current coach Jason Garrett has been under fire as speculation grows that he will be fired at the end of the season.
Holgmren, who was a head coach for the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, has admitted that he often gets the itch to return to coaching. His departure from the Browns has already been determined. He said he could leave before the end of the season if he feels he's no longer contributing to improved player performance. New CEO Joe Banner has pretty much assumed his role.
The rumor about Holmgren's interest might gain traction considering that he has worked with Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones on the NFL Competition Committee.
Holmgren spoke out against speculation taking place during the season, when coaches are "fighting like crazy for their jobs" and added that he has "tremendous respect" for Garrett.
So what's next for Holmgren?
"I honestly don't know what my future holds," he said.
