Four NFL teams still over the salary cap - Green Bay Press Gazette

Four NFL teams are still over the salary cap as the start of the new league year is now only three days away.

The Dallas Cowboys ($6.8 million), New Orleans Saints ($6.6 million), Carolina Panthers ($3.5 million) and Washington Redskins ($2.1 million) are the teams that must shed salary via restructures, extensions or releases.

The figures are in relation to the adjusted salary cap, which is based on how much cap room teams carried over from the 2012 season.

The Saints have asked linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith to restructure their deals or accept pay cuts. The players are due a combined $13.8 million in base salary this season.

The Cowboys got under the cap by restructuring deals for a bunch of players, including DeMarcus Ware, Miles Austin and Dan Connor. Nose tackle Jay Ratliff has a $5 million base salary that has yet to be altered.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were $1.4 million over the cap, but are now under after the release of linebacker James Harrison. The move saves them about $5 million in cap space.

Overall, there is $478 million of cap room across the league. The teams with the most cap space: the Cleveland Browns ($47.4 million), Cincinnati Bengals ($42.9 million), Indianapolis Colts ($37.5 million), Philadelphia Eagles ($34.2 million) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($32.2 million).
