Hall of Famer Troy Aikman says it might be time to find the future replacement for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
While Aikman is still supportive of Romo, who has a 55-38 regular-season record, he said during an NFL.com chat on Thursday that drafting a quarterback in April should be a priority for the Cowboys.
Galloway & Company
Chris Mortensen joins Galloway & Company to talk about the Cowboys' offseason changes, Roger Goodell and the distractions facing the Ravens.
"I like the way the Packers did it all those years," Aikman said of a Green Bay team that has drafted 12 quarterbacks since 1992. "To bring a guy in essentially every season, whether you draft him in the fourth round or fifth round or third round, whatever it might be. I think there's something to be said for that."
After Aikman retired following the 2000 season, the Cowboys drafted three quarterbacks and started 11 different QBs.
Romo, meanwhile, has become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. However, he's 1-3 in the postseason and 1-6 in win-or-go-home games, which has raised concerns about his ability to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl.
He took over the starting job from Drew Bledsoe during the 2006 season and hasn't given it up since. Romo is entering the final year of his contract, and it's expected the Cowboys will give him an extension. Contract talks between Romo and the Cowboys halted during the 2012 season because the quarterback didn't want them to be a distraction.
The Cowboys want to extend Romo long-term, but how long, given his age -- he turns 33 in April -- remains a question.
"I don't think they need another quarterback, to make that clear," Aikman said during the chat. "But because of Tony's age, they certainly have to start addressing who the guy is going to be that comes in after him. If there's a guy that they can pick up and maybe develop in the third, fourth round, I think that's a real positive thing for them."
