In what is being blamed on a "colossal mistake," the Denver Broncos released defensive end Elvis Dumervil Friday, about 35 minutes after he accepted a cut in salary. Despite that agreement, Dumervil was shockingly released when paperwork for the adjusted contract wasn't filed by 3:59 p.m. ET Friday.
The Denver Post reported Dumervil informed the Broncos he would lower his 2013 salary to $8 million. Under the terms of his previous six-year, $61.5 million deal signed in 2010, Dumervil was set to receive a base of $12 million for this season.
Although Dumervil and the Broncos reached a verbal agreement with 35 minutes to spare before the deadline, Dumervil's agent Marty Magid failed to fax paperwork in time, according to NFL.com. The team was forced to waive Dumervil rather than get stuck paying him the full $12 million.
NFL.com reported that a fax machine was inoperable, and the Broncos' front office frantically tried to find a work around for Dumervil's agent to send the paperwork, but to no avail. A source told NFL.com the agent made a "colossal mistake."
But Magid told USA Today Sports the paperwork wasn't transmitted in time because the Broncos made late changes to the financial details and didn't send him a correct copy of the final deal until after 3:30 p.m. EDT.
Broncos vice president John Elway did not rule out re-signing Dumervil. But if they do, they'll have to take the cap penalty for releasing him into account as well as any new figure that would arise from a new deal.
–Former Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings agreed to a contract with Packers' rivals, the Minnesota Vikings, who reportedly agreed to pay him $47.5 million over five years.
Jennings is expected to be the Vikings' No. 1 receiver after the team traded Percy Harvin to Seattle for a first-round pick and two other draft picks this week.
–San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum "three or four weeks ago," according to the NFL Network.
That may explain why Smith, who had 19.5 sacks after 13 games, failed to get another sack the rest of the season. It left him three sacks shy of the NFL record of 22.5.
The team has yet to make an official announcement on Smith's injury or surgery
–Tight end Tony Gonzalez made his return for the 2013 season official by signing a two-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons.
The two-year deal is worth $14 million, according to NFL.com. He is guaranteed to receive $7 million in 2013, but there is no indication he will return for the 2014 season. The second year of the deal was included for bookkeeping purposes, according to the report.
–Quarterback Kevin Kolb was released by the Arizona Cardinals in a expected move that saved the team $7.5 million in salary cap space.
The Cardinals signed defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, who played his first four seasons with the Oakland Raiders to a one-year deal, Pro Football Talk reported.
They also signed cornerback Antoine Cason to a one-year contract, the Arizona Republic reported. He started all 16 games for the San Diego Chargers last season.
–The Philadelphia Eagles announced they have acquired receiver Arrelious Benn along with a 2013 seventh-round draft pick from the Tampa Buccaneers in exchange for a sixth-round pick this year and a conditional draft pick in 2014.
Benn played in eight games for the Bucs in 2013, but he had only four catches for 26 yards.
–The Miami Dolphins signed tight end Dustin Deller to a one-year, $4.25 million contract, according to multiple reports. The Dolphins also signed wide receiver Brandon Gibson to a three-year deal, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
–Free agent running back Danny Woodhead, who played last season for the New England Patriots, signed a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers.
Woodhead's move comes on the heels of slot receiver Wes Welker also leaving the Patriots and signing with the Broncos.
The Chargers also signed running back Ronnie Brown to a one-year deal.
–Cornerback Kyle Arrington re-signed with the Patriots, agreeing to a four-year deal. The Patriots also signed wide receiver Donald Jones, a onetime starter for the Buffalo Bills.
–Free-agent safety Adrian Wilson has signed with the New England Patriots, multiple media outlets reported. Wilson, 33, has been selected to five Pro Bowls and he started 14 of the 15 games in which he played for the Arizona Cardinal last season.
Two other Pro Bowl defensive players, defensive linemen Dwight Freeney and John Abraham, and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders were scheduled to meet with the Patriots.
–Safety Louis Delmas reach an agreement to stay with the Detroit Lions. He will sign a two-year, $9.465 million contract, according to multiple reports.
–Seventh-year linebacker Nick Roach signed with the Oakland Raiders and is expected to be the starting middle linebacker in 2013.
Roach, primarily a strong-side linebacker for the Chicago Bears over the past five seasons, filled in for injured middle linebacker Brian Urlacher in 2012, starting 14 games.
–Free-agent offensive tackle Jake Long wrapped up his visit with the St. Louis Rams without a deal and has multiple teams interested, including Miami, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
–Ed Reed left the Houston Texans' facility on Friday after a two-day recruiting visit without finalizing a contract, but negotiations are ongoing with the 34-year-old free agent safety.
The Texans also re-signed offensive tackle Andrew Gardner.
–With six defensive players signed in the first three days of free agency, the Indianapolis Colts began clearing roster space by releasing safety Tom Zbikowski.
Zbikowski started 11 games and totaled 47 tackles (28 solo), four passes defensed, one interception and 1.0 sack.
–The Kansas City Chiefs signed fifth-year offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz.
The 6-6, 340-pound tackle and guard played for the Minnesota Vikings last season and appeared in all 16 games.
–Free agent running back Mike Goodson signed a three-year, $6.9 million contract with the New York Jets. Goodson averaged 6.3 yards on 35 carries and had 16 receptions in 2012.
–Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk has agreed to restructure his three-year contract, according to Pro Football Talk. The numbers for the restructured deal were not yet available, according to the report.
The Packers also signed restricted free agent linebacker Robert Francois to a one-year deal, Pro Football Talk reported.
–The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed Buccaneers have reached agreement with free agent defensive tackle Roy Miller to a two-year contract, agent Mike McCartney said, according to Pro Football Talk.
The Jaguars also announced they reached an agreement with free agent defensive back Alan Ball.
–Defensive end Marcus Spears has reached an agreement on a two-year, $3.55 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Spears played defensive end in the Dallas Cowboys' 3-4 alignment, but their switch to a 4-3 scheme did not suit him.
