In a thrilling finish at the Rose Garden, the Portland Trailblazers ended the Utah Jazz's 1999-00 season, winning their 2nd-Round Series 4-games-to-1 to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. Coming off their Game 4 victory, the Jazz ended the half on a 16-4 run to take an 8-point halftime lead behind the usual strong play of Karl Malone (27 pts, 11 reb, 6 ast, 3 stl) and the hot-shooting by Bryon Russell (18 pts, 6 reb). Portland trimmed Utah's lead to 2 by the end of the 3rd-quarter but the Jazz took a 4-point lead into the final minutes on an off-balance runner by Karl Malone. Trailing by 2, the championship experience of Scottie Pippen sparkled as Pippen hit the go-ahead 3pt with 7.3 seconds remaining. On Utah's ensuing possession, Bryon Russell was fouled off a spectacular feed by John Stockton but missed both free throws with questionable fan interference on the basket-support. After Pippen split 2 free throws, Utah had one final chance but the referees swallowed their whistles when Russell was fouled on a last-second three-point attempt and Utah's season was over. The loss signified the end of guard Jeff Hornacek's distinguished 14-year NBA career. Hornacek, who announced he would retire prior to the season, scored 10 points in his final NBA game.
