Ex-Dallas Cowboy Terrell Owens gets ovation as new sports team owner - Dallas Morning News

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Terrell Owens was a popular figure Saturday at the PBA 2013 Detroit Winter Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The ex-NFL wide receiver and owner of the Dallas Strikers received an ovation when introduced to the crowd, was swamped by autograph seekers and did an interview for the PBA broadcast.

The 39-year-old brought his team good fortune as Dallas advanced to the fourth spot in the stepladder finals to face New York thanks to Rhino Page, who qualified the Strikers in a roll-off with four other teams.

"Rhino did a great job riding that wave from yesterday (Friday), going from the eighth spot to the fifth spot, making it in barely by 10 pins," Owens said. "Today was a good start."

The Strikers lost in the first-round of Saturday's final, 223-191, to the eventual champion New York City WTT Kingpins, owned by tennis legend Billie Jean King.

Owens said he had a good time and planned on being part of the team format on a long-term basis. "I would definitely like to be a part of this as long as they will have me," he said.

When Owens served a short stint as co-owner of the Allen Wranglers, things didn't exactly turn out according to plan. He lost his share of the organization and was cut from the team.

But that experience hasn't stopped Owens from giving it another try

A 190-average bowler, Owens won't play for his team like he did with the Wranglers and will instead stick to the business side of a sport he has always maintained interest in.

"I want to keep that competitive edge by getting involved with a sport I really enjoy," Owens said on PBA.com. "I always felt that my time in Dallas was special and I had a great time while I was there. Hopefully we can put Dallas back on the map with a bowling championship."

While a bowling championship may not exactly solidify Dallas as the king of the sports world, Owens' team features a star studded lineup highlighted by PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke.

"Norm's a good friend and a great bowler so I have a lot of confidence in him leading the team," Owens said. "I'll be anxious to see how we do."

Owens is one of eight celebrity owners in the new PBA League. Other owners include former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis with the Motown Muscle, former Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley with the Pittsburgh Jack Rabbits, L.A. Clippers guard Chris Paul with the L.A. X, tennis great ing with the New York City WTT KingPins, Grey's Anatomy star Jessie Williams with the Brooklyn Styles, comedian and TV host Chris Hardwick with the Silver Lake Atom Splitters and actor/comedian Kevin Hart with the Philadelphia Hitmen.
