The fight took place near the end of the NBA basketball game on November 19, 2004, between the NBA Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons, taking place in the Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan, outside of Detroit. This is reputed to be the worst on-court brawl or fight in the history of the NBA. It took place as the Detroit Pistons were on the brink of a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Pacers. The players brawl began with about 45 seconds remaining in the game. Indiana held a 97--82 over Detroit. The Detroit Piston center Ben Wallace drove towards the basket and was hard fouled by Pacer forward Ron Artest. Wallace then shoved Artest and the bench clearing fight was on. The brawl took an unfortunate twist, as it was almost calmed down, when Artest decided to lay down on the scorers table and an unruly fan threw what appeared to be a beer on him. Artest lunged at the fan, into the stands, joined by several other players. Piston coach Larry Brown is seen on on the video disgusted as he tried to make an announcement calming the situation. Artest wound up being suspended for the remainder of the season - 86 games. Stephen Jackson of the Pacers was suspended for 30 games, and Jermaine O'Neal of the Pacers was suspended for 15 games.
