It's been a long, sad spring and summer without football. Fortunately, that's coming to an end in August as the NFL begins four weeks of preseason contests.
It all begins Aug. 3, as ESPN2 presents the induction ceremony for the 2013 class of enshrinees to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Players joining the pantheon of football greats are Larry Allen, Cris Carter, Curley Culp, Jonathan Ogden, Dave Robinson and Warren Sapp, along with coach Bill Parcells.
The following night in Canton is the Hall of Fame Game between the Miami Dolphins and the Dallas Cowboys (NBC, Aug. 4). The game doesn't count in the standings but, unfortunately, the injuries do. That's why you're likely to see the Cowboys' Tony Romo and the Dolphins' Ryan Tannehill under center for only a series or two.
Other NFL preseason games of note on national TV include the Cincinnati Bengals at the Atlanta Falcons (ESPN, Aug. 8) in a matchup of playoff teams from last season. The Indianapolis Colts head to MetLife Stadium to take on the New York Giants (FOX, Aug. 18). The Colts are coming off an 11-5 season that saw a playoff appearance and a stellar debut for quarterback Andrew Luck. After missing the postseason last year, quarterback Eli Manning and the Giants hope to be playing for Super Bowl XLVIII in their home stadium. The Seattle Seahawks visit Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., for a preseason matchup against the Packers (CBS, Aug. 23). Both teams reached the playoffs in 2012 and figure to be in the postseason again. The Packers may be out for a small measure of revenge (it's only a preseason game, after all) for last September's infamous "Fail Mary" play, in which a blown call by a replacement official gave the Seahawks a last-second win.
