NFL Playoff Scenarios: Ideal Potential Conference Championship Matchups - Bleacher Report
The Wild Card Round will feature intriguing matchups, but NFL fans will hope that certain teams survive in order to create a scenario in which they get to watch truly exciting conference championship games.
Week 17 contained two thrilling showdowns with massive playoff implications. The Minnesota Vikings kicked a last-second field goal to beat the Green Bay Packers and secure a postseason berth, while the Washington Redskins edged out the Dallas Cowboys in a de facto playoff game for both teams.
It was a fitting end to a season full of surprises. If the postseason is equally exciting, it will be a treat for spectators.
Here are the conference championship matchups that would be most fascinating, and the scenarios in which these teams would meet on January 20.
AFC: No. 2 New England Patriots at No. 1 Denver Broncos
This is the matchup that every NFL fans wants to see. Marquez versus Pacquiao IV was one of the best sporting events in 2012, and Manning versus Brady IV would be an early candidate for the best of 2013.
The Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts faced off in the postseason three times during Peyton Manning's tenure in Indy. Tom Brady won in 2003 and 2004 en route to victories in the Super Bowl in both years, but Manning came out on top in 2006 and also went on to win a championship.
Now that Manning is in Denver, the matchup will be slightly different, but a change of scenery may even add to the intrigue. Mile High Stadium is certainly an arena worthy of such an exciting matchup.
Both quarterbacks are surefire Hall of Famers and the two greatest signal-callers of their era. Despite being in their mid 30s, each is in the midst of a spectacular season, and their teams own the top two seeds in the AFC.
Due to their places atop the conference, it is extremely simple for this matchup to occur. Both teams simply need to win in their Divisional Round contest, and if this does not happen, it will be extremely disappointing for NFL fans.
NFC: No. 5 Seattle Seahawks at No. 3 Green Bay Packers
An age-old adage states that revenge is a dish best served cold, and with a playoff game at Lambeau Field in late January likely to feature frigid weather, the Packers will have a chance deliver vengeance on the frozen tundra.
While there have been plenty of highlights during the 2012 season, the Week 3 game between Green Bay and Seattle was one of the lowlights. On a now infamous Hail Mary effort, Packers safety M.D. Jennings intercepted Russell Wilson's pass, but the replacement referees—in their final mistake—awarded a touchdown to Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate.
The blown call set off a social media firestorm in which fans fully expressed their outrage, and Green Bay offensive lineman T.J. Lang summed up the general sentiment in the most retweeted Tweet of the NFL season. The comment, and the link provided, does contain profanity.
But the real refs returned to work the following week, and if these teams reach the conference championship, they will only have to deal with occasional minor errors, instead of inexplicable calls that alter outcomes.
For this matchup to go down, both teams will obviously need to win in the Wild Card Round. This would create Divisional Round games between the Packers and the San Francisco 49ers, in addition to the Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons. If both teams win these potential showdowns, NFL fans will have their ideal NFC conference championship.
NFL Sunday Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings Start Time, Odds - Pregame.com
The NFC North has already been decided but we still have a rivalry game on NFL Sunday between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. The game is scheduled for a 4:25 p.m. start time and it will be televised live on FOX. Currently the odds for the game have the Packers favored by 3.5 points.
Green Bay has wrapped up the NFC North title and could finish perfect in the league for a third straight year with a win today over the rival Vikings. The Packers are no doubt looking to secure a first round bye and they can do so with a win.
Minnesota is still in the playoff picture as well. A win certainly would do them good over the Packers but a Chicago or Dallas loss certainly would be nice as well.
Having Adrian Peterson back at full strength for an entire season was a big plus for this team. He's on pace to be a potential MVP candidate so far this year and if the Vikings were to win today and get to the post season, it would be hard not to give him the award. He's rushed for 150 yards or more in six of his last nine games.
Plus we know he is chasing down Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2,105 yards. He needs to surpass the 200-yard mark today in order to come close to Dickerson's record. That's possible — he ran for 210 yards against the Packers in a Week 13 loss.
Aaron Rodgers, who has completed 73.1 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns in the Packers winning streak, was last season's MVP. Don't look now, but the Packers have been awfully quiet this season and a win today would put them at 12-4 overall. Remember, this team struggled out early in the season. Now they've won nine of their last 10 games and can lock up the No. 2 spot in the NFC and a first round bye with a win.
Green Bay has dominated Minnesota lately. The Pack have won give straight against the Vikes and 10 of the last 13 games the two teams have played.
Not many people believe in Christian Ponder and there's no doubt that he misses Percy Harvin, who is still the Vikings' leading receiver but hasn't played since Week 9. And to make matters worse, no Vikings receiver has been able to top the 55-yard mark since Week 10. Now, having Peterson running wild is obviously a plus, but Minnesota seems to one-dimensional right now.
Green Bay will obviously play their starters in this game, so don't feel that they will just mail it in and get ready for the playoffs. Mike McCarthy and company want to continue to be perfect in NFC North Divisional game. They want the No. 2 seed. They're favored in this game against a team that's in a must-win situation. All factors into a win on the road for the Packers.

On a divisional matchup weekend in the NFL, the playoffs are now set and breaking news…Dallas QB Tony Romo won't be part of the playoffs…..
I know, I know not exactly a big surprise, especially for long-suffering Cowboys fans. They continue to be America's team, but just like the Buffalo Bills are just good enough to lose.
And lose they did last night to a young QB star who should have a stellar career, much more so than Romo. Robert Griffin III came into the league as a Heisman winner in college and now he is a bona fide NFL superstar, leading the Redskins to the NFC East title for the first time since 1999.
They won 28-18 and it was a sombre NFL Network crew of former Cowboys Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders who presided over the post-mortem
Helped out by another young stud in the making, RB Alfred Morris, Washington is one of the league's surprising teams this season. They finished a solid 10-6 and have as bright a future as any team.
They led the NFL in team rushing with a 169.3 per game average, almost five yards more per game than the Vikings and Adrian Peterson. Morris 1,613 yards were second to Peterson, who finished nine yards shy of breaking RB Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105.
RGIII picked up 815 yards on the ground, despite missing a game after he twisted his leg gruesomely. He led all QBs in rushing.
In Minnesota, it was the AP show as the Vikings beat the Packers 37-34 to claim a wild card seed and another meeting next week at Lambeau.
All day long in Fox America's Game of the Week, the TV guys Joe Buck and Troy Aikman took pains showing Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers and his frustration with the officials, especially referee Mike Carey.
Apparently, the golden boy Rodgers (who is a great QB but is very sensitive to criticism) didn't like Carey's ball placement and continued berating the 22-year veteran. But as NFL fans know by listening to Carey explain infractions, he is not one to be rushed.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy talked about the officials during a half-time interview and the whining was on. But later, McCarthy somehow got away with throwing a challenge flag after a scoring play. The cameras showed WR Jordy Nelson nabbing the red flag, thus most likely saving McCarthy being Schwartzed.
You lost the game guys, get over it. Maybe the officials were glacial placing the ball but maybe you shouldn't have thrown that flag.
The third best RB in the league has been Marshawn Lynch, of the Seattle Seahawks. Yesterday, they beat a scrappy St. Louis Rams team 20-13.
On one play, Lynch got into beast mode picking up some tough yards. "You're not going to stop Marshawn Lynch by grabbing his jersey," said TV analyst Tim Ryan. Exactly! Lynch has been known to cause earthquakes during some of his long and punishing runs the past few years.
Meanwhile, in Indianapolis the Texans cruised into town for a final game matchup against divisional rivals the Colts and seemed overmatched from the beginning in a 28-16 loss.

It was the return of emotional leader coach Chuck Pagano as a banner showed the slogan Chuckstrong then Coltstrong. Not a dry eye in the house as the appreciative mid-westerners showed their appreciation for what Pagano has gone through, battling cancer and leading his team from a hospital bed, to an 11-5 record and a berth in the playoffs.
At one point, the cameras showed a furious looking Texans QB Matt Schaub. He did not look pleased as the AFC's formerly top seed have to play again next weekend against the Bengals.
Colts Deji Karim returned a kickoff 101 yards to erase a short-lived Houston lead. "Speed kills, doesn't it Dan?" asked TV host Greg Gumbel to his partner Dan Dierdorf. "The Houston lead lasted a matter of seconds."
It wasn't the most exciting of final weekends in the NFL, but one thing they do better than any other league is finish with a bang. All games were divisional matchups and this should be done by all pro North American leagues forever.
Nothing like ending the season with some hate! Now onto the playoffs!

The opponents for all 2013 regular-season games have been determined and a complete list of each team's home and away matchups was issued today by the NFL.
The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.
Under the formula, every team plays 16 games as follows:
· Home and away against its three division opponents (6 games).
· The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (4 games).
· The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (4 games).
· Two intraconference games based on the prior year's standings (2 games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place, and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.
Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired in the schedule rotation to ensure that teams playing the AFC and NFC West divisions would not be required to make two west coast trips (e.g. at San Francisco and at Seattle), while other teams in their division had none (e.g. at St. Louis and at Arizona).
The official 2013 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.
NFL Kickoff 2013 Weekend will begin on Thursday night, September 5, and the regular season will conclude on December 29.
Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey will be played on Sunday, February 2.
